Bedford Family Eye Care Moves to Its New Location and Transitions to the Digital Age with Electronic Health Records System

Big news at Bedford Family Eye Care is that we have moved locations to better serve your needs. We moved from the old office at North Bridge Street to the new office complex at 1332 Lowry Street beside Berglund Buick GMC and Virginia Furniture Market. We moved Labor Day Weekend and are absolutely loving our new location. We were able to custom design the layout to suit our needs perfectly. You enter the main door and go to the left for appointments and to the right for the optical. Throughout the exam things flow in a clockwise fashion and ends where you began. We hope our new space and expanded optical dispensary will allow us to better serve your needs and better maintain continuity of care.

Equally HUGE, is the news that we have begun
our transition to electronic health records. We went live on September 24th, 2014. While slowing us down in the short-run, it has provided us with many advantages and we are beginning to increase both our productivity and efficiency with the new system. A lot of the new features such as our patient portal, electronic prescribing, secure patient messaging systems allow for increased patient safety, improved care as well as increased patient access which helps us fulfill our mission statement. We still allow Dr. Gladwell to use paper though--something he appreciates since he's retiring in December. Its hard to learn a new system when you've done something one way for 47 years! Dr. Quesenberry helps him enter it into the computer and keeps everything moving the right direction. Karla and Wendy both love the new system and enjoy not having to pull, file, and keep up with paper records and fill things out by hand. Its all in the computer now! Insurance filing is so much easier since you don't have to copy and recopy all the information. Just click and it auto-fills the forms, batches the claims, etc. The new system will greatly streamline, integrate, and organize our operations. Also, you can download our office forms on our website, fill them out before your appointment and bring it with you saving you time at the office. Let us know how we are doing in the comments below! We welcome your feedback.

AIR OPTIX Colored Contacts by Alcon ...Back to the Future!

Finally, a colored contact lens that Bedford Family Eye Care can feel comfortable recommending!

Introducing the AIR OPTIX Colored Contacts by Alcon.

When plastic (hydrogel) colored contact lenses came out in the 1990's, they were cutting edge technology. They allowed you to modify or accent your look, and gave an oxygen level of around 20 (Dk/t). Unfortunately, as time went along and more studies came out that showed the risks and damage to the eye associated with oxygen levels under ~30 (Dk/t), the eye care industry as a whole began to move towards higher and higher oxygen lenses (upwards of 100 Dk/t is standard now with most new lenses). In order to achieve these higher oxygen levels, silicone had to be added to the lenses. This allowed the lens to breathe on your eye and significantly reduced the risks for scarring, ulcers, and other conditions created with wearing the low-oxygen plastic hydrogel lenses....

The problem with colored contact lenses was that the color they used didn't bind with the silicone in the new lens materials. They repelled each other. And for over 25 years, there was no innovation to get around this apparent technology block. So, most eye care providers simply stopped recommending them because they were no longer acceptable given the risks to the eye, and the fact that the newer lenses were so much healthier.

So, back to the future. Here we are. It's 2014 and we now have the first colored silicone hydrogel contact lens that actually delivers 138 Dk/t to the eye! The way they did it seems simple, but I'm sure it was more complicated than I think because it took them 25 years to do it... Instead of painting the color on the front surface of the lens (as was done in the 90s), they put the color in the middle core of the lens and surrounded it with silicone, providing two major benefits. 1.) Great Oxygen Levels, and 2.) Great Comfort! No longer do you feel the colored surface on the front of the lens or have problems with dryness towards the end of the day like you did with the old Freshlook contacts. These lenses are new, and we are excited to recommend them to you! Welcome back to the future!

Info for the former patients of Drs. Gladwell and Unterbrink: We're still here for you!

Dear Patients of Drs. Gladwell & Unterbrink

As of May 1st, 2014 the offices and patient records of Thomas E. Unterbrink, OD and David A. Gladwell Optometry, INC. have merged and are doing business as Bedford Family Eye Care. Under my new direction and ownership, we may have a new look and feel, but we're still here for you with good hometown style eye care - and that's something that will not change. As Bedford Family Eye Care we will continue our commitment to helping you achieve clear, and comfortable vision and maintain excellent eye health in a comfortable environment at an affordable price. I look forward to seeing you for many years to come!

I first started providing optometry services in Bedford in January of 2013. My associate, Dr. Weatherholt, was helping the two optometry clinics transition from the retiring doctors. I was invited by Dr. Weatherholt and Gladwell to join them in providing optometry services given my background and interest in the Bedford area. The first year of transition overall went well and much constructive feedback was given to aid in the process. We have a few new faces here since some of you were in last, but I think you'll feel right at home. Wendy and Karla will put you at ease with their friendliness and professionalism. They both have great experience and a solid understanding of modern eye care, optical, insurance, coding, electronic billing, etc. and I've worked hard to identify issues from start to finish in order to make the eye exams at Bedford Family Eye Care the highlight of your day. We look forward to the next phase of transition. As always - we welcome and invite your feedback. I have specifically built a patient satisfaction survey as part of our website to collect your feedback and constructive comments. You can find it here at our Location and Scheduling page. Scroll down to find it. I often reflect and remind our team (and sometimes our patients ;) that change is difficult for everyone, but it is necessary because it allows for growth -- and that is exactly what we have experienced this year -- so much so that we have outgrown our current location. So the next phase of transition will be relocating our office from 412 N. Bridge Street to the new location at 1332 A Lowry Street over between the Virginia Furniture Market and Berglund Buick GMC dealership by Walmart. The new location will provide more space to allow greater efficiency, also an expanded dispensary and greater glasses selection, better parking, and more patient privacy. We invite your feedback!

Along with these changes comes new services and new hours. Our services include:
-Routine Eye Care & Specialty Contact Lenses
-Medical Eye Services (Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Diabetes, Cataracts, Eye Infections, Chronic Dry Eye, Shingles, etc)
-Emergency & On-Call Eye Services (injuries, foreign bodies, flashes/floaters & visual disturbances, burns & painful eye conditions – call our main line and follow prompts after hours)
-Evening & Saturday Hours Available (open normal business hours, plus late Thursday evenings until 6:30 p.m. and open the 2nd Saturday of the Month from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)

Again, I am looking forward to getting to meet and know each of you, and I hope to see you soon in our new building! Thanks for making Bedford the best little town to work and live.

Sincerely,

Jared P. Quesenberry, O.D.
